The Goulandris Natural History Museum is devoted to the study, preservation and protection of the natural environment through extensive field research, educational activities and a number of thematic exhibitions. The museum was founded in 1965 in order to promote interest in the natural sciences, to raise the awareness of the public, in general, and in particular to call its attention to the need to protect Greece’s natural wildlife habitats and species in the danger of extinction.

It is placed in Kifissia, a beautiful northeastern suburb of Athens, excellent for family walks, shopping or even for a rest in its modern cafes and restaurants. The museum is housed in a complex of two interconnected buildings, Goulandris Natural History Museum and Gaia Centre for Environmental Research & Education.

The museum displays rich collections of zoological, botanical, marine, rock, mineral and fossil specimens. A significant number of these species has been recorded thanks to the research done in the laboratories of the museum.

The Gaia Centre for Environmental Research & Education demonstrates to visitors the way planet Earth has been functioning for millions of years and how it functions today, with the interventions of modern people. Via new interactive technologies it provides visitors with the unique opportunity to get acquainted with Earth, the diversity of its landscapes, flora and fauna, and understand the impact of human activity on the environment.

The museum is an excellent place for kids, as it is a great opportunity for them to come into contact with the animal and plant kingdoms. Children are impressed by the life sized exhibits, which even includes mammals. Also, the educational activities are designed to develop and increase children’s environmental awareness in an exciting way for them.

A nice cafe-restaurant is housed in the garden of the museum. The dishes are pretty good and the environment is very pleasant and family friendly.
