The Museum of Cycladic Art, being dedicated to ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, is truly interesting. It is breathtaking to see how people crafted the stone and metals to create art already more than 5,000 years ago!
The exhibitions of the museum focus on three main subjects:
– Cycladic Art (3200 – 2000 BC), on which the museum puts special emphasis – 1st floor of the main building
– Ancient Greek Art (2000 BC – 395 AD) – 2nd floor of the main building
– Ancient Cypriot Art (3900 BC – 6th century AD) – 3rd floor of the main building
– Daily life in antiquity – 4th floor of the main building
The Museum of Cycladic Arts is housed in two buildings, which are connected by a glass-roofed corridor:
1) the Main Building (4, Neophytou Douka Street – displayed on the map) housing the permanent collections and the New Wing (for educational programmes, lectures, seminars and other)
2) the Stathatos Mansion (1, Irodotou Street) housing the temporary exhibitions and the offices of the museum.
The museum also has a very nice cafe, located in the museum atrium, on the ground floor of the Main Building. The glass roof permits the sunlight to come in, making the cafe an excellent choice for some peaceful moments of relaxation in the city centre. The cafe is open at the museum’s opening hours.
